COVID-19 Protocols

Pertaining to COVID-19

Here at Wild Sun, we are evolving along with the world as new information presents itself.  As we are in a communal environment and working closely with vulnerable animals we have instituted our own requirements for our and your protection.

**Hotel guests are exempt from the following requirements**

  • Unless you can show proof of previous positive COVID test and subsequent recovery within the past 90 days, all new program participants are **REQUIRED** to be fully vaccinated at least 14 days before arrival.  If you are unable to meet this requirement, you must write to jeremy.jimenez@wildsunrescue.org with your reasons why to request an exception.

Regardless of vaccination status, Wild Sun **REQUIRES** all volunteers, interns and program participants to:

  • Present written proof of a negative COVID 19 diagnostic test OR documentation of recovery in the case of a covid positive test result within 3 MONTHS of arrival (If you are VACCINATED or if your sickness began more than 3 months before arrival you MUST STILL bring proof of a negative test)

    • Must be a diagnostic test (PCR or antigen) performed by a doctor or in a lab or pharmacy which provides written or digital results.

      • The only at-home tests that will be accepted are those monitored by video chat to ensure reliability along with written results by the monitoring agency

      • Antibody tests are not accepted.

    • If traveling straight to Wild Sun, test must be taken within 3 days of flight

    • If traveling within Costa Rica beforehand, test must be taken within 3 days of arrival at Wild Sun. This can be arranged with Lab Echandi in various locations: - San José Oeste: 2201-7038; Heredia y Alajuela: 2106-1349; San José Este y Cartago: 2234-0562 / 2271-0771.

    • If you have had a positive viral test in the past 3 months, and you have met the criteria to end isolation, you may arrive instead with documentation of your positive viral test results and a letter from your healthcare provider or a public health official that states you have been cleared for travel.

      • Criteria to end isolation:

        • 10 days since symptoms first appeared and

        • 24 hours with no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications and

        • Other symptoms of COVID-19 are improving*

returning to the united states:

At the moment, if you are flying to the United States after your program, you will need a negative Covid 19 test within 1 day of your departing flight. This can be an antigen or PCR test. Both tests can be taken in Cobano, about 40 minutes from Wild Sun or in San Jose near the airport. PCR tests guarantee results within 48 hours and cost $130-$150. Antigen tests cost around $80 and guarantee results within 2 hours. Please let us know you will need the test at least a week ahead of time if you need help to make arrangements.

There is also an antigen testing center at SJO airport for $65. You must make an appointment with Lab Echandi at least 4 hours before your departing flight. The lab is open 24/7.

What measures are being taken at Wild Sun to protect my health in light of COVID-19?

We ask your cooperation in making sure we all stay safe. While on campus, please maintain proper social distancing from other guests and staff to ensure safety. In addition, here’s what we’re doing to keep you safe:

General

  • Each staff member’s temperature is taken when they arrive for work. If any symptoms appear, staff will be sent home and volunteers quarantined on site.

  • Any staff in direct contact with guests are required to wear a mask.

  • Staff are required to wash their hands every 30 minutes.

  • Staff must report any symptoms that they have or those of housemates or social contacts.

  • Staff will maintain 2m from guests when possible.

Reception

  • Guests will have their temperature taken upon arrival. If any symptoms are present, we will follow the guidelines given by the health ministry.

  • Reception staff will sanitize their hands frequently and before and after each guest arrival.

Rooms

  • Room keys are sanitized and left in rooms to await guests.

  • Rooms are cleaned before and after all guests as well as every 3rd day if you have an extended stay.

    • You are welcome to decline cleaning during your stay.

    • If you would prefer more frequent cleaning, please let us know.

  • All items in the room will be cleaned and disinfected.

  • Staff will wear a mask while cleaning rooms.

  • They will wash or disinfect hands before and after each room cleaning.

  • Cleaning staff will not enter the room if guests are present.

  • Bed sheets will be changed twice a week to minimize contact, unless you request otherwise.

Restaurant

  • In an effort to reduce volunteer and hotel guest interaction, we have dedicated our dining area to volunteers while we build a new restaurant for hotel guests only. We are not offering restaurant services at this time. Each room has a coffee maker and mini fridge. There are several restaurants in town as well as food delivery available.

Communal Areas

  • All of our shared spaces are outdoors or open air, meaning there are much lower chances of spreading germs.

  • Pool chairs will be spaced out, but can also be moved to accommodate social distancing. Our staff will wipe them down regularly.

———

  • We follow all measures suggested by the ministry of health and the ICT.

  • This document will continue to be changed and updated to abide by any new measures put in place.
